The Crucible Act One

EQ: Determine a central idea of The Crucible and analyze its development over the course of the text.

Starter:

Infer how the Milgram experiment relates to ideas of the Crucible and the Salem Witch Trials.

Activity: 

1.  Introduction Discussion

Create one higher order thinking question based on ideas stated in the introduction.
Write it on one side of an index card, leaving the other side blank for answers.
You will use these cards for a quiz, quiz, trade.

As a class, we will read the following:
A Note on the Historical Accuracy of this Play
Act One Pages 3-7.

Discussion
Imagine if you lived during this time period, how would you feel about the rules and ideas put in place?
Based on the information that we read, hypothesize how this type of community and mindset initiated the SWT.

3.  Act One

As a class we will read pages 7-13.

We will need volunteers for the following roles: 
Tituba
Parris
Abigail
Susanna
Mrs. Putnam

Discussion Questions
Evaluate how fear plays a role in The Crucible.
Analyze the relationships that exist between the characters.
Connect the ideas from the introduction to act one.
Identify a main idea that is created in act one.

4.  Main Idea Identification

In small groups, complete the following 

1.  Read/skim the article How To Find the Main Idea.
2.  Write an objective summary of the section read in class. 
3.  Identify a main idea.
4.  Provide a quote that supports your idea.
5.  Share with the class.

How confident do you feel identifying main ideas?
